The March 26, 2011 Sunday New York Times published an on-line interactive botanical op-ed titled "When New York City Bloomed" by Marielle Anzelone and Wendy Hollender. The text and art work describe the extinction of our local flora and display 12 paintings of select lost plants. Each plant displayed was once found within the City limits but lost habitat. Rutgers University Offers a Flora of New Jersey College Summer Course
A summer college course will be offered during the second session between June 27 to August 4th. Class activities are scheduled Monday and Tuesday 10:45AM to 12:55PM with three full day field trips every other Thursday. The course instructor is Dr. Kate Lepis (lepis.kate@gmail.com) from the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus. New Smartweed Found in New Jersey
New Smartweed Species Described in New Jersey Botanists from the New York Botanical Garden have described a new smartweed, Persicaria extremiorientalis, established on the east coast of the United States, including portions of New Jersey. A recent article in the most recent issue of the Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society indicates the smartweed is an established species in Northern and eastern New Jersey. Philadelphia Botanical Club’s Bayard Long Award Now Available
Janet Novak, Club President and a member of the Flora Project, has asked to help spread the word about the Bayard Long Award. This is the club’s grant for students doing botanical research. To be eligible, the research must be related to plants that occur within a 50-mile radius of Philadelphia. Note that the research doesn't have to be done in this area -- it's enough to be studying species that occur in this area. The award is generally $500.
