New York Botanical Garden’s Specimens Available in Digital Form

October 22, 2013 by njflora

A news recent report in the weekly journal Science (Vol. 342 pg 173, 11 October 2013) describes the New York Botanical Garden’s effort to digitize and photograph their massive 7 million specimen collection.  According to the report, approximately 2million specimens are now available on-line for viewing at http://sciweb.nybg.org/science2/VirtualHerbarium.asp.  The portal is the pathway to the William and Lynda Steere Herbarium’s speciemens and photographs.  The C.V. Starr Virtual Herbarium provides resources that would otherwise unavailable to botanists worldwide.  The list of available resource includes catalogs, specimens from Brazil, and a wide variety of lichen and moss specimens.  For the FNJP participants, the Invasive Species and Gymnosperm resource could be invaluable to the tasks of NJ’s flora catalog.
